Privacy Policy
Better Clipboard plays fair
Your privacy is the foundation of everything we do. Better Clipboard is built on a simple principle: Your data belongs to you, not to us, not to your cloud provider, just you and only you! This policy describes what we collect and why. For a full explanation of how your data stays 100% private, see how cloud sync works.
1. Data controller
Better Clipboard is run by Jan Zeman, Denmark, as an individual project. If you have any privacy questions, you can reach us through our help form.
2. Information collected
You are the only owner of your data. Better Clipboard never monitors, tracks, analyzes or copies any of your data. All your data is stored on your device only by default, in a database that only you can access. We, the Better Clipboard developers, have no access to your locally stored data. Backups are encrypted by default, though you can opt out of backup encryption in the settings. We do not collect personal information such as your name, address, phone number or email address. You can always delete all your data, both on your device and from any connected cloud provider.
3. Cloud Sync
If you choose to use Cloud Sync, your sync data is stored with your selected cloud provider (currently only Google Drive is supported). All data is end-to-end encrypted on your device before it is uploaded, and this encryption is mandatory. There is no way to use cloud sync without it. The encryption keys never leave your device, so the cloud provider can only ever see encrypted data and cannot read its content. Read more about how this works here.
- Google Drive: Better Clipboard stores your data exclusively in the Google Drive App Data folder, a private app-only area that is not visible in your Google Drive file browser and cannot be accessed by any other application. Better Clipboard requests only the drive.appdata permission. It does not touch your personal files or any other part of your Google Drive.
4. Performance data
Better Clipboard uses two services to understand how the app is used and to catch problems:
- Google Analytics: Used on the Better Clipboard website to count visitors and measure usage of individual pages and features. Google Analytics collects anonymised data including approximate location, device type and page interactions, and transfers this data to Google’s servers in the United States. See Google’s Privacy Policy.
- Sentry: Used in the app to collect crash reports and error logs. Reports contain technical information (device type, OS version, stack trace) and do not include clipboard content or personal information. See Sentry’s Privacy Policy.
Neither service ever receives the content of your clips, favourites or any other data you store in the app. We do this because we have a genuine interest in keeping the app stable and improving it (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR). You can opt out of both analytics and crash reporting at any time in the application settings.
5. Disclosing your information
We will not sell, transmit or distribute any data without your permission or consent, unless required to do so by law.
6. Links to other websites
Our website may link to other sites. We are not responsible for their privacy practices, so it is worth checking their policies independently.
7. Data retention
We do not store personal data on our own servers. Your clipboard and sync data lives only on your device and, if Cloud Sync is on, in your cloud provider account. Sentry crash reports are kept for a maximum of 12 months. Google Analytics data is kept for no more than 14 months.
8. Your rights
If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, you have the following rights over any personal data we hold:
- Access: request a copy of what we hold about you.
- Rectification: ask us to correct inaccurate data.
- Erasure: ask us to delete your data.
- Restriction: ask us to limit how we use your data.
- Portability: receive your data in a readable format.
- Objection: object to processing based on legitimate interests.
We do not hold personal data on our own servers. The only data we process through third-party services is anonymous performance data via Sentry and Google Analytics. Most of these rights are therefore handled by the in-app deletion options. If you want to exercise a right formally, drop us a message through our help form and we will get back to you within 30 days. You can also file a complaint with your national data protection authority at any time.
9. Security
Cloud sync data is end-to-end encrypted on your device before transmission, and this encryption is mandatory. Backups are encrypted by default. Local clipboard data is stored in a database that only you can access. Connections to our servers use HTTPS. No system is perfectly secure, but we take this seriously and take reasonable steps to protect the data we process.
10. Changes to this Privacy Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Changes will be posted here with a new effective date. For anything significant we will give more prominent notice and will not reduce your existing rights without your consent.
